灰白銀膠菊 未來的輪胎

美國亞利桑納州鄉間田裡，工人在281英畝的地面種幼苗，3年後這些幼苗將會綠油油，開小白花，成熟後，高30到70公分不等，是草本或矮灌木，怎麼看也不像今天生產全球90％天然橡膠的巴西橡膠樹。

世界最大輪胎廠日本Bridgestone的美國分公司，正在種植灰白銀膠菊，看看它能否以符合成本效益的規模生產。普利司通在鳳凰城的「生膠加工研究中心」啟用，工廠設在研究中心後面，1個月內就要每天生產灰白銀膠菊的膠，並且測試。

全株灰白銀膠菊有6到10％可以成膠（主要是皮與根），地球上已知有好幾百種植物產膠，但膠質上等者屈指可數。灰白銀膠菊是德州特有種。

全球90%橡膠來自東南亞，過去數年價格小漲，產業還算穩定。但輪胎膠幾乎沒替代品，而來源如此單一，不無風險，是普利司通另尋輪胎膠源的最大動機。
