MSCI明晟指數為目前全球基金最主要的追蹤指標，類型分產業別、國家或地區等，範圍涵蓋全球，計有2,000多家國際機構投資者採用MSCI指數作為參均基準，估計追蹤MSCI指數的全球基金規模高達數兆美元。

每一種MSCI指數，各有不同的組成比率與權重配置，如MSCI新興市場指數，以亞洲市場占過半比重最多。外資在投資新興市場時，會依MSCI指數權重來分配資金，因此一個國家或地區權重被調升，就會吸引外資加碼；反之，權重若遭調降，外資就會同步調節。

MSCI每年固定在2、5、8、11月進行季度調整。其中， 5及11月為半年度調整，權重與個股增刪的幅度較大，因此格外受到市場關注。
