苗栗市新苗街「客家食堂」4層樓透天厝店面，清晨5點多傳出火警，鄧姓男屋主發現1樓天花板吊扇竄出火苗，先用滅火器企圖搶救，不敵濃煙和火舌趕緊往外逃生，3樓的1男2女大學生房客，跑到樓頂避難平安獲救。但鄧男的老母薛喜妹（80歲）和妻子李素禎（53歲）因吸入性嗆傷，昏倒在樓梯間，送醫後鄧母搶救不治，鄧妻昏迷和燒燙傷、有生命危險轉送台中榮總急救中。

消防局指出，清晨5:28接獲報案抵達時，透天厝不斷竄出濃煙，火勢約1小時撲滅，但在1、2樓的樓梯間發現李婦抱著愛犬，右手灼傷倒趴地板，鄧母癱坐2樓樓梯口，身旁還有4個做生意用的小錢包。而聯合大學廖姓、徐姓和柯姓3名學生房客，自3樓往樓頂逃生，消防員自隔壁2樓頂架鋁梯，才將飽受驚魂的3人救下來，同學聞訊跑來安慰。

男屋主鄧寶雄說，當時他發現吊扇疑似電線走火，因天花板裝潢助長火勢快速漫延，根本來不及再到樓上救媽媽和妻子。消防局第一救災大隊長謝宗龍說，鄧男一直強調人受困北側樓梯，結果婆媳卻在南側樓梯間被救出，錯失黃金搶救時間。起火原因和損失有待調查。（楊永盛／苗栗報導）
